We all deserve to feel safe and protected at home. But for some of us – those experiencing family violence – home is not always a safe place.

Family violence often happens behind closed doors, making it hard for people experiencing abuse to reach out for support. Research shows that family violence can become more frequent and severe during periods of emergency. For many people, Covid-19 restrictions and lockdowns made life even harder, and victim survivors were often trapped in their home with the perpetrator.

The Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria (DVRCV) together with peak body Domestic Violence Victoria (DV Vic) approached us with a brief to produce a campaign and suite of resources which highlighted that help, advice and support is available, even during restrictions and lockdowns – and that it’s always okay to leave home if you’re escaping violence. The materials provide information about how to identify family violence, how to make a plan to keep yourself safe, and a collated list of specialist support services.

In addition to a website and social media campaign, posters and wallet cards formed the main physical assets. Communications were targeted to two types of audiences: “Are you safe at home?” for people experiencing family violence themselves, and “Is someone you know unsafe at home?” for people concerned about a friend, neighbour or family member.

The end result was a campaign which successfully communicated a message of help and support to people in the most challenging of situations. The project was also recognised for excellence, with an Australian Graphic Design Association award in the ‘Design of good’ category.

The right mix of materials
The campaign utilised a combination of social and printed resources – including discrete wallet cards delivered through supermarkets and hotels – to reach audiences who often struggle to connect. This was supported with a dedicated online ‘Are you safe at home?’ campaign site. This online resource contains clear information on identifying family violence, links to specialist family violence services, and what to expect when you make contact with a service. It also includes other ways to stay safe and quick links to useful websites.
